Video Game Design & Programming

Breakout

Picture
The first game that you are going to make on your own is a clone of the classic game Breakout. After the huge success of Pong, Atari realized a flaw in the game... it requires two players. This means that if you don't have a friend there to play with you, you can't play. Enter Breakout... a one person Pong. Interestingly enough, two future titans of tech created the game together... Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs. If that doesn't mean much to you, they are two of the original founders of Apple Computers. The video below offers some insight into the Jobs and the later in the video, Breakout. The second video is some gameplay of Breakout on an emulator with commentary about creation of the game. If you are into games and tech, I think you'll find both interesting.

What I would like you to do is create a clone of this classic. The gameplay will be just like the original game, but the design of the game will be yours. Create a local theme, sprites, and a splash screen to set the tone for your game. The gameplay should be logical so don't just choose random object or have a school bus sliding all around the screen!
